Charlie escapes from prison. After rescuing a girl and her mother from drowning, Charlie is invited to their home where a big party is held and he is treated like a hero. However, as a result Charlie's photo is printed in the newspapers and the prison guards come after him.

Easy Street (La strada della paura o Charlot poliziotto) è un film del 1917 scritto, diretto e interpretato da Charlie Chaplin: 🤍 Si tratta del nono film che Chaplin produce con la Mutual FIlm. Sinossi: un vagabondo entra per ascoltare la funzione in corso dentro la missione del suo malfamato quartiere e, alla fine, la ragazza che suona l’organo (Edna Purviance) gli propone di dare una mano al mantenimento dell’ordine così l’uomo, affascinato dalla bella, si precipita ad un comando di polizia per essere arruolato come poliziotto. Dopo essere stato dotato di uniforme e manganello, al vagabondo è assegnata la prima missione, cioè dare una mano alla pattuglia nel famigerato quartiere di Easy Street, dove il bullo del luogo (Eric Campbell) detta legge. Giunto sul posto, il novello agente deve vedersela con il bruto che sembra avere la meglio, fino a quando il vagabondo non lo stordisce con il gas di uno dei lampioni lungo la via e la polizia lo prende in custodia. Mentre aiuta una pezzente a derubare il droghiere, il poliziotto incontra la fanciulla della Missione e la accompagna dai poveri a cui lei dà una mano. Il Bullo intanto scappa dalla prigione e torna in Easy Street; qui egli inizia a litigare con la sua compagna, destando l’attenzione del vagabondo che interviene e poi si dà alla fuga inseguito dal mascalzone: il bullo capitolerà a causa di una stufa lanciatagli in testa dal poliziotto. La ragazza della Missione, rimasta sola, viene infastidita da alcuni malintenzionati e rinchiusa in una cantina insieme ad un drogato, ugual sorte toccherà al vagabondo dopo aver incontrato la stessa banda di furfanti, ma una volta in cantina egli, sedutosi per sbaglio su una siringa, metterà al tappeto il molesto tossicodipendente guadagnandosi l’amore della ragazza. I suoi abiti, benché malandati, sono quelli di un vero gentleman inglese. Alla fine di ogni disavventura lo vedremo spolverarsi la giacca, riaggiustarsi la bombetta sulla testa ed avviarsi solitario sulla strada verso il tramonto. Egli è il non integrato, l’estraneo, lo straniero alla ricerca dell’accettazione sociale. Egli incarna l’aspirazione alla dignità di ogni essere umano. Si serve dei panni dell’emarginato per scagliare la sua satira contro l’altro lato del sogno americano, le contraddizioni di quel sistema che stava rendendo ricchi molti americani impoverendone altri. Con Chaplin si va oltre lo slapstick: la maschera si fa personaggio, la risata non è più fine a se stessa. The Cure (Charlot fa una cura o La cura miracolosa) è un film del 1917 diretto e interpretato da Charlie Chaplin: 🤍 Un ubriacone (Charlie Chaplin) arriva in un centro termale nella speranza di curare la propria dipendenza. Dopo aver superato l’inconveniente della porta girevole, l’uomo arriva in stanza seguito dal suo enorme baule pieno di alcolici, ma è subito portato in giardino per depurarsi con l’acqua termale; qui egli cerca di flirtare con una signorina continuando a gettar via l’acqua che gli viene offerta, infine deve cedere e, una volta bevutone un sorso, è costretto a correre in camera a ingerire immediatamente dell’alcol. Intanto un robusto signore (Eric Campbell) infortunato ad un piede, corteggia non corrisposto una ragazza (Edna Purivance); tra i due si intromette l’ubriacone che fraintende le attenzioni dell’uomo credendo siano rivolte a lui e fa cadere il ferito in terra. L’omone su tutte le furie chiede al direttore di cacciare l’ubriaco, ma la fanciulla importunata si schiera a difesa dello sbronzo che viene subito portato a fare un massaggio. Il direttore scopre che i suoi dipendenti stanno ubriacandosi con gli alcolici nella stanza dell’uomo, così ordina ad un fattorino di sbarazzarsi delle bottiglie; l’inserviente ubriaco getta le bevande dalla finestra direttamente nelle acque termali che vengono così contaminate. Il massaggio dell’ubriaco si trasforma in un vero e proprio incontro di lotta, mentre gli effetti delle acque salubri iniziano a farsi sentire: il salone della Spa si trasforma in una sala da ballo, tutti gli ospiti sono ubriachi e alcuni di loro provano a molestare la signorina che aveva difeso l’ubriaco; per fortuna lo sbronzo riesce a salvarla. La ragazza prova a convincere l’uomo a smettere di bere e gli offre l’acqua delle terme, che finisce per stordirlo e per fare infuriare la signorina, la quale lo abbandona. L’uomo prova a seguirla, ma s’imbatte nell’omone sulla sedia a rotelle e lo getta, non volendo, nella pozza d’alcol. Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, KBE (16 April 1889 25 December 1977), known as Charlie Chaplin, was an English comic actor and film director of the silent film era. He became one of the best-known film stars in the world before the end of the First World War. Chaplin used mime, slapstick and other visual comedy routines, and continued well into the era of the talkies, though his films decreased in frequency from the end of the 1920s. His most famous role was that of The Tramp, which he first played in the Keystone comedy Kid Auto Races at Venice in 1914. Chaplin was one of the most creative and influential personalities of the silent-film era. He was influenced by his predecessor, the French silent movie comedian Max Linder, to whom he dedicated one of his films. All rights reserved.

The Dentist is a 1914 film starring Charlie Chaplin. The film is also known as Busy Little Dentist, Down and Out, Laffing Gas, and Tuning His Ivories. We are told Charlie is a dental assistant. He arrives at work where the patients are already waiting. He joins the tiny second dental assistant in the back room. They have a brief squabble then Charlie goes to the waiting room to clean the floor with a carpet sweeper. He bumps into a patient and a further squabble starts. Then back to the rear room for more squabbling. The dentist arrives, and his first patient goes in, obviously in pain. The dentist prepares the nitrous oxide anaesthesic (also known commonly as "laughing gas" due to its effects prior to and after unconsciousness). With the man unconscious he pulls his tooth, but then he can't get him to wake up. He calls for Charlie and when he arrives the dentist runs off. Charlie tries to wake him and eventually tries hitting his head with a mallet. The man revives but starts laughing. Charlie knocks him out with the mallet. The dentist then returns and Charlie is sent to the drug store to get a prescription. After more fighting with the patients he goes from Dr Pain's surgery to the Sunset Pharmacy. He strikes a man standing at a news-stand outside. He looks at a woman (the dentist's wife) and Charlie kicks him in the stomach before chasing the woman himself, and an incident occurs where she loses her skirt and runs off in embarrassment. He continues fighting with the man, who receives a brick in the face, thus becoming another dental patient. A second brick hits a passer-by equally losing him .
