Check out the machine gun rental packages at SGC: 🤍 In anticipation of the release of Fallout 76 in November, we're taking a look at the guns of the Fallout universe and comparing them to real guns. The Fallout series of games is set in a post apocalyptic alternate history universe that diverged from our history somewhere after 1945. The transistor was developed later in the Fallout world than in our world and nuclear technology is much more advanced while computer technology is much less advanced. It's not too important to get wrapped up in the details of the whole alternate history thing. Just think of it as a picture of Morrow Morrow land, the way we thought the future might have been in 1950. Because of this shared history, many guns exist in the Fallout universe that also exist in the real world. Theoretically, anything that existed in 1950 or so should also exist in Fallout, but the game designers can't possibly include every real world gun. There are also a lot of cool, fictional guns like the Gauss rifle, plasma rifle, and an atomic bomb catapult but this video series will focus on the guns that appear in both Fallout and in the real world. What better place to start than the iconic Thompson sub machine gun? In Fallout 4, it is referred to only as a "submachine gun". Like other guns in the game, it is highly customizable, but it is reasonably effective in the vanilla flavor without any mods. Notable legendary versions are the Silver Submachine gun, which is just a silver skin that goes along with the cool, film noir Silver Shroud story line, and the Spray n' Pray which shoots exploding bullets. But this video is about comparing a real life Tommy gun to the one in the game and to make that happen, our friends at Scottsdale Gun Club hooked us up with a no kidding, real life Tommy gun. Shooting the Tommy gun was, of course, an absolute blast. Like most true sub machine guns, it fires from an open bolt. Consequently, the trigger pull is very heavy and long. You don't squeeze the trigger so much as yank it. It would be difficult to hit a man at anything more than 100 yards or so. It would also be pretty hard to have a negligent discharge. you have to really want to shoot this gun for it to fire. The Thompson is heavy. Suprisingly heavy, really. It weighs 10 lbs. Empty. To put that in perspective, an M16A2 weighs a little under 9 lbs with a full 30 round mag. But that weight makes it rather controllable. It's not as flat shooting as some more modern designs like the Kriss Vector or even the MP5, but for a straight blowback sub machine gun in .45 Auto, it is surprisingly easy to hold groups. Of course, this wasn't actually an antique. This gun is available to rent at SGC and they would be insane to let people beat up a valuable antique day after day. It is a faithful reproduction of the M1A1 made by SGC gunsmiths. As video games go, the Fallout rendition of the Tommy gun is fairly true to life. Cosmetically, some of the details are from the M1928 and some are M1, but it is unmistakably Thompson. The firing rate is quite similar and it looks really close. The charging handle and ejection port are on the wrong side, as is the case in many games. Video game developers like to put the cool bits in view of the "camera". Of course, real .45 Auto doesn't esplode bad guys like it does in the game, no matter what the over sharing old dude at the gun counter tells you. Even though pistol FMJ is kind of underwhelming in gel, I know you would be extra disappointed if I didn't do a gel test. Of course, all the rounds penetrated completely through the 16" gel block and continued down range. But had they been captured, they would look like most FMJ: 100% weight retention with no expansion. The Kulsprutepistol m/45, better known as the Carl Gustaf M/45, was a Swedish submachine gun (SMG) chambered in 9mm (9×19mm), designed by Gunnar Johnsson. The sheet metal stamping techniques used in making the German MP 40 and the British Sten had major influences on the design of the M/45. It was manufactured at the Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori in Eskilstuna, Sweden, and was the standard submachine gun of the Swedish Army from 1945 to 1965. Approximately 300,000 units were produced. The PPK-20 SMG is a compact weapon recently introduced into the market by Kalashnikov Group. Due to its design it is offered as a part of emergency kit for the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) pilots, combat vehicle crews and assault teams. It fires the whole range of 9 x 19 rounds, including 7N21 armour-piercing ammunition. Unlike its predecessor the Vityaz-SN SMG, the PPK-20 features an ambidextrous safety lever/firing mode selector. It embodies a well-balanced combination of optimal rate of fire, high accuracy, ease of handling and compact layout.

The Reising is an example of a firearm design that worked perfectly in the rear but performed horribly in actual combat conditions. It was a Second World War era submachine gun that had much potential but ultimately failed the big test down range in use by frontline infantry units. Suffering from poor quality control, awkward controls, and a low magazine capacity, the Reising was readily discarded by Marines in the Pacific in favor of literally any other small arm than the submachine gun. However, this didn't completely doom the 120,000 Reisings made during the Second World War as a large number were picked up by police departments across the United States and abroad. These law enforcement officials found the Reising to be ideal for their purposes, being much cheaper than most equivalent submachine guns. It wasn't being utilized in the jungles of Guadalcanal, thus it proved to be much more reliable on in urban environments where it could be easily kept clean and maintained. There were three variants of the Reising, the full length, short barrel, select fire M50. The wire folding stock, select fire M55 in use/designed for Marine Paratroops (not used as used in WW2). And finally the full-length barrel, semi-automatic only M60 that is non-NFA legal to this day. A number of law enforcement departments were interested in the M60 because of the ease of purchase. 🤍 🤍 Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! 🤍 Developed by Heinrich Vollmer in the 1920s, this quite distinctive submachine guns was marketed by the Erma company starting in 1932 and sold quite well internationally. This particular example was used by the German police and is chambered for 9x19mm. Many of these guns were also sold to Spain where they were popular with the Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War. For several decades, the Beretta company’s handguns and submachine guns were nearly all designed by the very talented Tulio Marengoni…but nothing can last forever. After World War 2, Beretta engineer Domenico Salza began working on a new SMG design, one which would be more compact and more controllable that the M38 family. At roughly the same time, Beretta changed it naming convention to avoid looking like it was still marketing old guns; the Model 38/49 become the Model 1. Each new design took the next number, until in 1958 the Model 12 was introduced. The Model 12 (and this improved Model 12S) has both forward and rear pistol grips, and a bolt which wraps around the barrel well forward of the chamber. This movement of the reciprocating mass forward helps reduce the gun’s tendency to climb, and makes the Model 12 a quite capable design. The Walther MP was an all-stamped submachine gun developed in the late 1950s, and available in long (MPL) and short (MPK) versions. It is an open-bolt, blowback design, but uses a somewhat innovative bolt in which most of the mass is located above and in front of the chamber, to reduce bolt travel and receiver length. I found it to be a very pleasant gun to shoot, and I suspect it was largely unsuccessful in large part due to the superior marketing skills of H&K with their MP5 submachine gun.
The 43M submachine gun was developed by Pal Kiraly, based on the MKMO and MKPS series of submachine guns he had worked on for SIG in Switzerland before returning to Hungary (we would go on to make the San Cristobal carbines for the Dominican Republic after WW2). The initial version of the gun was the 1939 39M, with a 3” longer barrel and fixed buttstock. This was adopted by the Hungarian military, but only ordered in small numbers (about 600), which led the FEG factory to delay production until they could get enough other orders to economically justify tooling up. That finally happened in 1942, and in the meantime Kiraly and the factory had nearly finished the improved and shortened 43M version. Ultimately about 13,000 39M SMGs were made from 1942 to 1944, and about 5,000 43M SMGs in 1944. At that point Allied bombing ended production, and the tooling was eventually confiscated during Russian occupation of Hungary. Mechanically the 43M (and 39M) are lever-delayed blowback actions, firing the 9x25mm Mauser Export cartridge - the most powerful submachine gun cartridge in use at the time. The 43M stock feels very flimsy and uncomfortable, and it folds under the action of the gun. In addition, the 40-round magazine folds forward into the stock (much like the SIG MK series guns) to make it a much more compact gun to transport. Note that the 39M and 43M use different magazines!
